The Stress of Business Travel
Business travel is certainly one of the trade-offs for a high-powered executive position in a nationwide or global enterprise. And while many people love to travel for pleasure – traveling for business is different.
There was a time when business travel was considered well…glamorous even! Who didn’t like to get away from the daily routine of sitting at a desk, given the opportunity to travel to a new place and see some sights in between some sporadic “ho-hum” business meetings? Well the times they are a’ changing! Now, with laptops, wireless Internet, e-mail, cell phones and every other type of mobile device – business travel no longer affords the busy business executive any “down” time!
And with having to arrive at airports so early to clear the myriad of security checks, delayed or cancelled flights and jet lag, who wouldn’t be stressed out by business travel? Not to mention the stress that business travel puts on the family situation and your home life!
So…what can you do about it? Well, first off, if travel really isn’t your “thing,” make sure you inquire about how much travel the job will require, before you accept it. Try to schedule trips during the week so you can have weekends home. Lighten up on your workload as much as possible before and after your trip. Many airlines offer meditation tapes or movies on longer flights, so tune in and unwind – and keep the lap top in your carry-on bag!
In terms of your family life, try to plan a special outing before and/or after each trip. Email and cell phones are helpful for staying in touch with loved ones who miss you, especially children, on whom your travel probably has the most impact.
And remember to eat healthy and get more rest – especially before and after trips requiring changes in time zones. A visit to our office to preserve the integrity of your nervous system is a key too, especially since stress is often a cause of spinal nerve interference. Let us know if you are a frequent traveler, it helps us to provide you with the type of care you need!
